Mass loss predictions for hot stars

چکیده

I present the results of radiation-driven mass-loss predictions for hot stars of all mass. Mass loss is an important aspect for the evolution of massive stars, the rotational properties of the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts, and is essential in assessing whether the most massive stars explode as pair-instability supernovae, or avoid them due to mass loss. As a result, the rate of mass loss is critical for our understanding of the chemical enrichment of the Universe. Of particular interest is the question whether luminous blue variables are the direct progenitors of some supernovae. Although there is a growing body of evidence to suggest this, it remains as yet unexplained by stateof-the-art stellar evolution models. Finally, I discuss the relevance of mass loss for the appearance and rotational properties of hot Horizontal Branch stars in globular clusters and subdwarf B stars in the field.

Mass loss predictions for Subdwarf B stars

We present the results of Monte Carlo mass-loss computations for hot low-mass stars, specifically for Subdwarf B (SdB) stars. It is shown that the massloss rates on the Horizontal Branch (HB) computed from radiative line-driven wind models are not high enough to create SdB stars. We argue, however, that mass loss plays a role in the chemical abundance patterns observed both in field SdB stars, ...

Advances in mass-loss predictions

We present the results of Monte Carlo mass-loss predictions for massive stars covering a wide range of stellar parameters. We critically test our predictions against a range of observed massloss rates – in light of the recent discussions on wind clumping. We also present a model to compute the clumping-induced polarimetric variability of hot stars and we compare this with observations of Lumino...

Massive star feedback – from the first stars to the present

The amount of mass loss is of fundamental importance to the lives and deaths of very massive stars, their input of chemical elements and momentum into the interstellar and intergalactic media, as well as their emitted ionizing radiation. I review mass-loss predictions for hot massive stars as a function of metal content for groups of OB stars, Luminous Blue Variables, and Wolf-Rayet stars. Alth...

Constraints on mass loss from dMe stars: theory and observations

We show that the flux distribution of a wind from a cool star differs considerably from what is predicted by the theory for mass loss from hot stars. The differences are caused by the facts that 1) themass loss rates are lower, resulting in smaller optical depths in the wind, and 2) for winds from cool stars the temperature of thewind is higher than the temperature of the star while for winds f...

Mass-loss rates for hot luminous stars: the influence of line branching

The effect of photon frequency redistribution by line branching on mass-loss rates for hot luminous stars is investigated. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out for a range of OB-star models which show that previous mass-loss calculations which neglect nonresonance line scattering overestimate mass-loss rates for luminous O stars by ∼ 20 per cent. For luminous B stars the effect is somewhat l...
